HISTORY

Cusco, also known as Qosqo, is the Imperial City of Peru. Built upon the vestiges of the Inca civilization, it preserves imposing ruins in its surroundings that demonstrate this culture’s remarkable skill in engineering, stonemasonry, and architecture. One of the greatest examples of this legacy is the majestic citadel of Machu Picchu.

Machu Picchu, the ancient jewel of the Inca Empire, boasts a history spanning over seven centuries. Built in the 15th century by order of the Inca Pachacuti, it was conceived as a ceremonial or sacred center. Its main structures are estimated to have been completed in a period of 20 to 30 years, demonstrating an exceptional level of planning and construction for its time.

DISCOVERY

The Peruvian citizen Agustín Lizárraga discovered the ruins of Machu Picchu in 1902. However, he was unable to officially publicize his discovery. Nine years later, in 1911, the American historian Hiram Bingham reached the citadel, revealing this jewel of Inca heritage to the world.

WORLD RECOGNITION

In 1983, UNESCO declared Machu Picchu a World Heritage Site, highlighting its cultural and natural value. Later, in 2007, it was chosen as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, reaffirming its global importance.
